Podcast 39: Spooky Movie Night w/ my sister Sarah

Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 39 of Life On the Brink!

It's officially autumn, and I couldn't be more excited!

It's that time of year when all you want to do is cozy up with books and nostalgic stories, and, especially in October, a little spookiness adds to the fun. Now, if you're like me, scary movies are a hard pass, but I do enjoy a bit of suspense and mystery. When it comes to movie nights, I'm here for the fun, for the togetherness, and the popcorn.

So today I'm joined once again by my sister Sarah! She's been on the podcast several times to talk about seasonal movie nights, but today we're adding a dash of cinnamon to the brew, and discussing our favorite films for Spooky Movie Night!

What’s in our teacups? Vanilla chai

As always, our "interview" is full of fun commentary and tangents about Tim Curry, and I highly recommend listening to the full conversation. For reference, though, these are the films we mentioned:

OUR TOP SPOOKY MOVIES:

All-Around Top Pick: Clue.

Big old house: check. Thunderstorm: check. Murder in the lounge: check.

This was on both our lists and has it all! Mystery, comedy, multiple endings (seriously), and Tim Curry. If you can only pick one, this is the one!

1. Edward Scissorhands. Sarah added this to her list despite the Christmasy setting toward the end. It's a Tim Burton cult classic with a beautiful score and unforgettable imagery.

(other Tim Burton films we mentioned: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland + through the looking glass)

2. The Prestige. This was on both our lists! Whenever there's dueling magicians, you know it's gonna be good. This is Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale in an amazing back-and-forth battle of tricks and magic, and this movie has an ending that you DO NOT see coming, but completely makes sens. This is probably the move serious of the films we discussed, but so captivating.

3. Nanny McPhee. Sarah had this one on her list, and I totally see why. It's sort of a fairy tale, but with a different sort of magic. There's something about the music and the costumes and the coloring that sort of captivates you, and this one is great to see as a family, as well.

4. Sherlock Holmes (and it’s sequel). When the leaves start to turn, I turn to Baker Street, so I has to put these on my list. There's something so comforting about Holmes and Watson during the autumn months, and we both love this adaptation (maybe just as much as the BBC Sherlock series). The stories are woven so well, and there's a bit of wackiness and action to keep you on your toes.

5. Duplex. Sarah had to remind me about this dark comedy from 2003. It's Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore as a young couple who just moved into their dream home, except there's an old lady living above them who causes all sorts of chaos for them. Really, the big old house is all I need, and there's lots of cold-weather mystery.

6. Rear Window. My token Alfred Hitchcock pick. I love this movie because the main character never leaves his room for the entirety of the film, but rather watches his neighbors through a telescope. When he thinks he's witnessed a murder, he'll have to prove his sanity. Also, Grace Kelly is in it, so there you go.

7. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. This made both of our lists as it is the OG scary movie of our lives. Honestly, that scene with the magic mirror still creeps me out. Plus you've got all the autumn vibes from the cottage, the pie baking, soup over a fire, and, you know, apples.

8. The Goonies. I have a soft spot for this last one, it was my absolute favorite movie when I was an early-teen-goonie-wannabe. Between the crazy ensemble cast, the pirate motifs, the Fratelli's, SLOTH, and a great 80's soundtrack, it's such a heartwarming adventure, and a classic forever.

You always gotta pick which Goonie you are. (I'm Mikey)

So there you have it! Between last week's episode and this list of movies, there are so many things to enjoy this season. I hope you're able to enjoy a movie night or two with your friends, family, maybe your pet, or by yourself. Popcorn is a must, and around this time of year I never object to chocolate. Happy fall everyone!

Sarah’s Little Joy: Sarah went to an Indian restaurant this week and had a revelation; she's discovered a great love for green chutney. It's herbaceous and full of flavor, and has sent her to the web to find the perfect recipe. If you have any, comment below!

What We’re Listening To: This is a playlist I've concocted from the soundtracks of every film we mentioned in this episode. It's meant to be listened to in order and will take you on your own spooky adventure.

Thank you so much for listening! If you would, take a moment to review or leave a rating on Apple Podcasts, or share this episode with someone who will love it.

Until next time, friends, have a lovely week!
